Robert Edgar Farrow - WW1 Soldier

Robert Edgar Farrow was born in Waldridge, Durham, England on the 17th OCT 1878 . He enlisted with the Royal Engineers on the 18th April 1916 with rank of sapper. He was given regiment number 166620 and assigned as Field driver. At the time of enlisting he was a 37 year old Steam Roller Driver. He was sent to the Engineer Training Centre in Deganwy, Wales on 5th June 1916. He was based in No2 Depot Company at Conwy, Wales before being sent to France on the 4th November 1916 as part of the British Expeditionary force to France and stationed at the General Base Depot most likely in Rouen as this was also home to the No4 General Base Depot for Royal Engineers. The depot purpose was for supplies, reinforcements and remounts, ordnance, mechanical transport, sick and wounded (hospitals). He demobilised on the 19th March 1919 and tranfferred to Class Z Reserve at Chatham where he returned to his home in the town of Chester-le-Street in County Durham. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal for services during WW1 and I am in possession of his Victory medal. He never married and in 1939 he was living in St Michaels Lodging House, Southampton which was a lodging house for homeless men and he was working as a general labourer. He died at Southampton in 1947.
